The movie is set on Bird Island a paradise inhabited by flightless birds. The story centers around Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis) an angry and sarcastic bird who has trouble controlling his temper leading him to be something of an outcast in the community. Red s issues with anger management bring him into contact with other misfits including Chuck (voiced by Josh Gad) a hyperactive yellow bird and Bomb (voiced by Danny McBride) a gentle giant who literally explodes when he gets upset.
The peaceful life on Bird Island is disrupted when a mysterious ship arrives carrying green pigs led by Leonard (voiced by Bill Hader). The pigs initially pretending to be friendly slowly begin to integrate themselves into the birds society. However Red grows suspicious of the pigs true intentions especially as their numbers begin to grow.
As Red investigates he discovers that the pigs are stealing the birds eggs. Despite his reputation as a troublemaker Red rallies Chuck Bomb and the rest of the bird population to confront the pigs and reclaim their stolen eggs. This leads to an epic showdown on Piggy Island where the birds launch themselves at the pigs using a giant slingshot—a direct nod to the gameplay mechanics of the original Angry Birds game.
