The story follows Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), a hotshot, arrogant race car who is obsessed with winning and becoming the next big thing in racing. Lightning is a rookie sensation in the racing world, competing for the prestigious Piston Cup. However, his single-minded focus on winning makes him neglectful of his pit crew and disrespectful to others.
On his way to a tie-breaking race in California, Lightning accidentally ends up in Radiator Springs, a forgotten town along the once-popular Route 66. After damaging the town’s road, Lightning is sentenced by the town’s judge and doctor, Doc Hudson (voiced by Paul Newman), to repair the road before he can leave.
During his time in Radiator Springs, Lightning meets the town’s quirky inhabitants, including Sally Carrera (voiced by Bonnie Hunt), a Porsche who left her life in the city for the peace of small-town life, and Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy), a friendly and goofy tow truck who quickly becomes Lightning’s best friend. As he works to fix the road, Lightning slowly begins to appreciate the town’s slower pace and the value of friendship and community.
Lightning also learns that Doc Hudson is actually the legendary Hudson Hornet, a former Piston Cup champion who quit racing after a severe accident. Doc’s story helps Lightning understand that there s more to life than fame and fortune.
As Lightning grows closer to the townsfolk, he starts to reconsider his priorities. When he finally gets to the big race in California, he faces his main rivals, Chick Hicks (voiced by Michael Keaton) and The King (voiced by Richard Petty). In the final moments of the race, Lightning makes a selfless decision that proves he has truly changed, choosing to help others instead of focusing solely on winning.
