The story centers around Grug Crood (voiced by Nicolas Cage), the overprotective and cautious patriarch of the Crood family. Grug believes that survival depends on staying within the safety of their cave and avoiding anything new or unfamiliar. His family includes his wife Ugga (voiced by Catherine Keener), his teenage daughter Eep (voiced by Emma Stone), his son Thunk (voiced by Clark Duke), his ferocious mother-in-law Gran (voiced by Cloris Leachman), and his baby daughter Sandy.
Eep, the eldest daughter, is curious and adventurous, often frustrated by her father s strict rules. One night, she sneaks out of the cave and meets Guy (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), a more evolved and inventive human who warns her of an impending disaster that will destroy their world. Guy introduces Eep to fire and other innovations, which both fascinate and terrify her.
When their cave is destroyed by an earthquake, the Croods are forced to leave their home and embark on a journey through a dangerous and unfamiliar landscape. Grug is initially reluctant to accept Guy s help, but as the family encounters various challenges, including dangerous creatures and natural disasters, they begin to rely on his intelligence and resourcefulness.
Throughout their journey, the family members learn to adapt to their changing environment. Grug, in particular, struggles with the idea that his old ways of thinking may no longer be effective in ensuring his family s survival. Despite his initial resistance, Grug gradually comes to appreciate Guy s new ideas and innovations, especially when they prove crucial in keeping the family safe.
The climax of the movie occurs when the family reaches the edge of a cliff with no way to cross a massive chasm as the impending disaster—a continental drift—approaches. In a desperate bid to save his family, Grug comes up with a plan to throw them across the chasm to safety, sacrificing himself in the process. However, he survives the ordeal and is reunited with his family, finally embracing change and innovation.
The movie ends with the Croods and Guy finding a new, more vibrant land to call home, symbolizing the dawn of a new era for the family.
